MICHAEL CHOICE BATTING .448 FOR UNDEFEATED TEAM USA

The USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) is 10-0 this summer and a main element to the team's success has been UT Arlington's junior-to-be Michael Choice. In 10 games played (eight starts) this summer, Choice is batting .448 (13-for-29) with five multi-hit games, three doubles and nine RBI. Team USA has now won 34 straight games dating back to last summer, and the team is coming off a four-game series sweep over Guatemala and a victory against the New England Collegiate League All-Stars on Sunday. UTA'S JOHN SAUERHAGE NAMED HEAD COACH OF EL SALVADOR WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES TEAM

UT Arlington track and field head coach John Sauerhage is on his way to Belgrade, Serbia to serve as the head mentor of the El Salvador track and field team at the World University Games. Former UTA sprinter Takeshi Fujiwara, who finished his career this past season, is representing his country at the games and Sauerhage will assist him in his preparation for the event. GREG YOUNG NAMED ASSISTANT MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH

UT Arlington head men's basketball coach Scott Cross announced today Greg Young has joined his staff as an assistant coach. Young comes to UT A from Jacksonville College in Jacksonville, Texas where he spent the last four years as the head coach of the Jaguars. He also served as the school's athletic director. The UT Arlington baseball program started the 2009 Major League Baseball season with 11 former players who are either currently in the big leagues, as a player, coach or manager, or are trying to reach the big leagues from the Double or Triple-A level. With the addition of four players from the Class of 2009, Nathan Long (RHP), Andy Sauter (RHP), Matt Otteman (RHP) and Andrew Kainer (LHP), UT Arlington currently has 15 former players playing with a MLB organization.

HUNTER PENCE NAMED TO NATIONAL LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME ROSTER

Former UT Arlington baseball player Hunter Pence was named to the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Game as a reserve outfielder for the National League squad. MLB officials announced both teams' starters and reserves on Sunday, as Pence will make his Midsummer Classic debut on Tuesday, July 14, in the 80th edition of the All-Star Game at Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals.

MATTHEW SARTOR NAMED TO SOUTHERN LEAGUE ALL-STAR TEAM

Former UT Arlington right-handed pitcher Matthew Sartor has been named to the Double-A Southern League All-Star Game as one of 10 pitchers on the North Division roster. Sartor, who played at UT Arlington for two years (2006-07), will make his professional All-Star debut on Monday, July 13 at Regions Park in Birmingham, Ala., as one of four players representing the Chattanooga Lookouts (Los Angeles Dodgers).

UTA SUMMER HOOPS CAMPS ENDS SUCCESSFUL TWO-WEEK RUN

This week wraps up the camp season on the UT Arlington campus and this week over 120 campers are enjoying a week-long education into the world of Division I basketball.

In a short period of time UT Arlington center fielder Michael Choice went from trying to make the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) to leading Team USA to a five-game sweep over Team Canada in their first games of the summer. Choice, who will enter his junior year at UT Arlington in 2009-10, led USA with a .615 batting average, which included three multi-hit games while starting four games in the outfield.

(June 22-28) Michael Choice became the first player in UT Arlington baseball history to be named to the USA National Baseball Team (Collegiate) last week as he was selected to the 22-man roster on June 24. During the opening five games of the summer, Choice has led Team USA with a .615 (8-for-13) batting average while starting three games in left field and one game in center field as USA swept five games from Team Canada.

(June) Zack Fischer has carried over his fine play from the Mavericks season to his summer campaign as he took home the title last week at the Western Junior Championship at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin. Fischer, the junior-to-be from Wake Village, Texas, eased to a two-stroke victory with a 3-under-par 281 total in the 72-hole championship. Fischer led by two strokes at the start of the final round. He stretched his lead to six through 14 then wobbled a bit on the final four holes before coming in with the win.
