With 10 of the league's 18 sports concluded, UTA has taken a 5-point lead in the 2016-17 Bubas Cup standings, an all-sports competition that determines the most competitively successful athletic program in the Sun Belt Conference.

Following the recent men and women's basketball seasons in which the Mavericks claimed 23 of a possible 24 points, UTA owns a total of 69 points - 5 ahead of second place Texas State.  UTA claimed maximum points with championships in men's cross country (10), men's indoor track (8) and men's basketball (12).  The Mavericks claimed three titles out of the 9 league sports in which they competed during the fall/winter.

There are 8 spring sport championships yet to be determined:  Men & women's golf, men & women's tennis, softball, men & women's track & field and baseball.

The Bubas Cup is named after the Sun Belt Conference's first commissioner, Vic Bubas.  He served as commissioner for 14 years until his retirement in 1990.
