With Paul Gonzalez already qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship and Andrew Lindberg posting a solid performance at the 108th Texas Amateur Championship, Jacob Massengale thought he'd add his name to the list of impressive summer performances for incoming UTA freshman golfers.

The Montgomery, Texas native carded a 1-over par 72 yesterday to finish in third place and claim first alternate status at a U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier at Champions Golf Club in Houston.  After making par on each of his first seven holes, Massengale slipped with a pair of bogeys before making the turn.  He quickly settled down to par the next seven holes before finishing strong with a birdie on the par 4 17th hole.  Chad Sewell of Conroe claimed medalist honors at 5-under, while Hong Kong native Shuai Ming Wong claimed the only other automatic qualifier spot with a 3-under par 69.

The summer has been kind to UTA golf with the incoming freshman trio providing a glimpse into the future of the program, rising junior Tanner Gore making the cut at the prestigious Southwestern Amateur and head coach Stuart Deane continuing his impressive playing career with a victory at the Prize Possessions Eastern Championship, nearly making the cut at the AT&T Byron Nelson and making the cut for today's final round at the PGA Professional Championship in Oregon.
