Paul McConnell

Former UTA men's golfer Paul McConnell fired a 5-under par 67 Monday to qualify for the Valero Texas Open, a PGA TOUR event scheduled for this weekend at TPC San Antonio.

An Allen, Texas resident, McConnell played in two PGA TOUR events in 2016 - the Valero Texas Open and the Shell Houston Open.  He Monday qualified for each of those events.  He has two top-10s in 32 career starts on Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada. He finished T80 in his lone Web.com Tour start, at the 2015 Price Cutter Charity Championship.

The Valero Texas Open, first played in 1922, is the 3rd oldest PGA TOUR tournament. This year's event features 12 major championship winners and four former FedExCup champions in the field, in addition to defending champion Kevin Chappell.

As the UTA men's golf team prepares for its spring season opener in mid-February, UTAMavs.com caught up with graduate transfer Nick Thornton to discuss his holiday break, the upcoming season and the Maverick golf program, in general.

UTA freshman Paul Gonzalez fired a 73-70 to finish at 1-over and a tie for the individual lead, then won a playoff against Texas State sophomore Logan Lockwood to claim medalist honors at the Plum Creek Men's Amateur on Jan. 13-14 at Plum Creek Golf Course in Kyle, Texas.

Maverick golfers Nick Thornton and Jacob Massengale also participate in the event.  For complete results, click here.

UTA men's golf coach Stuart Deane posted a 4-under par 140 to finish fourth at the Northern Texas PGA Professional Championship this week at The Lakes at Castle Hills in Lewisville.

The top 8 finishers qualified for next June's PGA Professional Championship at Bayonet Black Horse in Seaside, Calif.  Deane, however, had already qualified for next year's event due to his top-20 finish this year and his participation in the PGA Championship earlier this month.

The top 20 players from the 2018 PGA Professional Championship will compete in the 100th PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Mo., scheduled for August 6-12, 2018.

With the discontinuation of the Jim West Intercollegiate, the UTA men's golf program has made a change to its schedule.  The Mavericks will participate in the prestigious 15th annual Boilermaker Invitational April 14-15 at Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind.

Hosted by Purdue University, last year's tournament featured nine of the top 100 teams in the country.  11th ranked Kent State claimed the team title last year by six strokes over host Purdue and nine ahead of third place Northwestern.  The University of Illinois has won a tournament record four team titles since the event started in 2004.

The Boilermaker Invitational will serve as the final regular season event for UTA before the team competes at the annual Sun Belt Championships in Florida.

With the summer winding down, UTA golfers Aaron Guanlao and Tanner Gore prepared for the upcoming season by posting a fourth place finish in the Rik Massengale Four-Ball Championship at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton.

The duo registered just three bogeys over the tournament's two rounds and finished with scores of 70-71 for a 3-under par 141.  Blaine Hale and Holden Weisner of Dallas claimed medalist honors by two strokes with rounds of 65-69 for a 10-under par 134.

The Mavericks return to campus for classes later this month and open their fall season Sept. 11-12 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss.
