UTA men's golf coach Stuart Deane posted a 4-under par 140 to finish fourth at the Northern Texas PGA Professional Championship this week at The Lakes at Castle Hills in Lewisville.

The top 8 finishers qualified for next June's PGA Professional Championship at Bayonet Black Horse in Seaside, Calif.  Deane, however, had already qualified for next year's event due to his top-20 finish this year and his participation in the PGA Championship earlier this month.

The top 20 players from the 2018 PGA Professional Championship will compete in the 100th PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Mo., scheduled for August 6-12, 2018.

With the discontinuation of the Jim West Intercollegiate, the UTA men's golf program has made a change to its schedule.  The Mavericks will participate in the prestigious 15th annual Boilermaker Invitational April 14-15 at Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind.

Hosted by Purdue University, last year's tournament featured nine of the top 100 teams in the country.  11th ranked Kent State claimed the team title last year by six strokes over host Purdue and nine ahead of third place Northwestern.  The University of Illinois has won a tournament record four team titles since the event started in 2004.

The Boilermaker Invitational will serve as the final regular season event for UTA before the team competes at the annual Sun Belt Championships in Florida.

With the summer winding down, UTA golfers Aaron Guanlao and Tanner Gore prepared for the upcoming season by posting a fourth place finish in the Rik Massengale Four-Ball Championship at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton.

The duo registered just three bogeys over the tournament's two rounds and finished with scores of 70-71 for a 3-under par 141.  Blaine Hale and Holden Weisner of Dallas claimed medalist honors by two strokes with rounds of 65-69 for a 10-under par 134.

The Mavericks return to campus for classes later this month and open their fall season Sept. 11-12 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Nick BarneyAmong the dozen or so UTA fans following Maverick director of golf Stuart Deane today was senior golfer Nick Barney.  Like Deane, Barney is a native of Brisbane, Australia but he has a couple of reasons for attending this week's PGA Championship.    He is related to Aussie PGA TOUR member Rod Pampling.  Barney supported cousin Pampling at the Masters Tournament in April and at the World Golf Championships - Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio last week.  He actually caddied for Pampling in Monday's practice round at Quail Hollow Club.

Pampling is 63rd in the current FedExCup ranking and has three career PGA TOUR victories.

"It was awesome. DJ, it was awesome, super nice, his brother AJ [Austin] is just phenomenal. They kind of talked us through what they do, how they do it, why they do it and for Zach [Cole] it's just an amazing learning experience.

"It was fun to go from no-one follow us to the world. It was a lot of fun, we had a great time and he's a great guy, it was like playing with one of your best mates." - Stuart Deane
