ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington had 83 spring-sport athletes named to the Capital One Bank/Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll announced for spring 2010.
The spring honor roll of 932 student-athletes is the longest list in Southland Conference history and boasts nine student-athletes of the year, seven players of the year and total of 124 students who earned 4.0 grade-point averages.
The honor roll includes student-athletes who participated in baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field.
UT Arlington is one of six member institutions with more than 80 honorees (83) and had 12 student-athletes with a 4.0 GPA.
There were 15 Maverick baseball players who made the list, which includes Freshman All-American Preston Beck (Dallas, Texas), Florida Marlins sixth-round draft pick Rett Varner (Trophy Club, Texas) and honorable mention All-Southland Conference selection Steffan Guest (Keller, Texas).
UT Arlington senior men's basketball player Tommy Moffitt (Irving, Texas), who earlier this spring was named to the Southland All-Academic team for the third time, earned honor roll recognition.
Five Maverick women's basketball players were listed, including senior guard Meghan Nelson (Cedar Hill, Texas) who was a first team All-Southland selection following the 2009-10 season and finished her UTA career as the program's eighth all-time leading scorer with 1,195 career points.
Zack Fischer (Texarkana, Texas), who competed in the 2010 NCAA Regional Golf Tournament, was one of six Maverick golfers who were named to the honor roll. Fischer led the Mavericks during the season with a 72.18 stroke average in 33 rounds.
The UT Arlington softball team had strong representation with 60 percent of its roster landing on the commissioner's honor roll. The Mavericks had four student-athletes honored who were named all-conference, including first team selection Samantha Chumchal (Richwood, Texas) and Southland Conference Freshman of the Year Teri Lyles (Keller, Texas).
The UTA men's tennis program, which captured its 11th conference championship this season, had eight student-athletes receive honor roll status, including singles All-Southland Conference performer David Subirats (Barcelona, Spain) and the doubles tandem of Brieuc Hamon (Noirville, France) and Yauheni Yakauleu (Minsk, Belarus) who were also second team all-conference picks.
Four of the Maverick women's tennis players were listed as honor roll recipients, including Klara Jogosova (Prerov, Czech Republic), Maria Martinez (Nules, Spain), Nikola Matovicova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and Daiana Negreanu (Bratislava, Slovakia).
The UT Arlington men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field programs had a combined 35 student-athletes make the commissioner's honor roll. The men's track and field athletes were highlighted by Wade Hayes (Bonham, Texas), who finished second in the pole vault event in the SLC Championships and Dwight Robinson who won the 800-meter at the conference meet.
Among the Maverick women's track and field athletes was women's indoor track and field athlete of the year senior Jasmine Walls (Pearland, Texas). A psychology major with a 3.30 GPA, Walls defended her titles in the 60 and 200 meters and was also named the conference's outstanding runner at the indoor championship meet.
