ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Pete Carlon has announced that Debbie Garcia has been named the university's new Senior Woman Administrator. Garcia fills the position that has been vacant since June when Melinda Terry left to become the head athletic trainer at St. Edward's University.

In her role as SWA, Garcia will represent the interests and assist in addressing the concerns of all female student-athletes and female athletics staff members, assist the director of athletics in addressing student-athlete welfare issues whenever such issues may arise, provide input and recommendations on departmental issues related to gender equity and Title IX compliance and as requested or required, attend NCAA and Southland Conference meetings as the representative of UTA in the senior woman administrator role.

Garcia has been a part of the Maverick athletic family for nearly a decade from her days as a student to her current role as the Academic Advisor and Champs Life Skills Coordinator. Garcia handles all community service and awareness projects for Maverick athletes, as well as serves as the director of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

"I am really excited to learn more about the administration and compliance issues," said Garcia. "This position ties in with what I have been doing over the last five years in helping the welfare of the students through academics and career planning. It will be a comfortable transition for me and I look forward to working at the conference level and beyond."

Garcia was a member of the track and field team as a freshman and sophomore before becoming a student assistant. Following her graduation, Garcia stayed a member of the track program as a graduate assistant before assuming her current duties within the department.

Garcia earned her bachelor's degree in history from UTA in 1997 and is currently working on a master's degree in history.

Garcia, and her husband, Mike, who is the assistant stadium manager at Maverick Stadium, are expecting their first child in mid-August.
