ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UTA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has been honored for their volunteer work in the Arlington community, earning the Sun Belt Conference SAAC Community Service Champion award for 2016-17, it was announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon.

"We are so proud of our student-athlete advisory committee," UTA Athletics Director Jim Baker said. "UTA is committed to building well-rounded student-athletes that have a passion for positively impacting their communities. I want to acknowledge Tim Kennedy's tireless organizational efforts and the selfless approach of our student-athletes. The way our young people volunteer and serve the community is a great representation of our University."

The UTA student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) accepted the award at the annual Sun Belt SAAC meetings in mid-July. The award is given annually based on a points system, with all 12 Sun Belt schools ranked each month after community service initiatives and events are reported. Those rankings award each school a set number of points which, when totaled at the end of the year, are used to determine the annual award winner.

"The mission and purpose of Student Athlete Advisory Committee is to give the student athletes a voice at the campus, conference and national level," Kennedy said. "SAAC also provides student athletes with opportunities to serve their fellow student athletes, the UTA campus, and the Arlington community. SAAC makes sure that our student athletes are well informed with all of the resources that are made available for them, bridge the gap between the campus and athletics, and give back to the community and people that are suffering.  Our SAAC members have really developed life long leadership skills that they can use in other areas in their lives."

UTA collected 5,915 canned food items, 3,335 clothing, footwear, electronic and toiletry items and 57 toys for donation to Mission Arlington, the UT Arlington Food Pantry and Salvation Army. UTA student-athletes went into the community to speak about the importance of education and reading, and distributed 8,290 bookmarks and encouragement cards.

UTA claimed two monthly awards on the year in November and February. Georgia Southern claimed the monthly award for the months of March and April to close the year.
