Mavericks Open Week with Series of Events
Aug. 27, 2010
Arlington, Texas -
Prior to the first day of school, the entire UT Arlington Athletic Department as well as student-athletes participated in several events contributing to the start of the new school year.
On Monday several teams took part in UTA's Mavs Move In which helps new and returning students move into their dormitories.
The Second Annual Welcome Back Social held Tuesday night was strictly for the student-athletes but several of the coaches and administrators took part in the fun activities which included a talent show and dodge ball contest. The track and field team took home first place, thanks to seniors Juan Lewis, Dwight Robinson and sophomore Tomahl Woods. The dodge ball contest was won by a combination of student-athletes from various sports.
The 2010-11 volleyball and golf teams were introduced at UTA's Welcome Back Mavericks Club Social held Thursday night at J. Gilligan's. Fans filled the restaurant where they heard both head coaches speak briefly on their upcoming seasons.
Athletic Director Pete Carlon was also recognized at the social by University of Texas at Arlington President James Spaniolo after earning Under Armour AD of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Twenty-nine athletic directors were recognized with four geographic regions separated into seven categories.
The Mavericks volleyball team opens their season tomorrow against Miami at the Nike Invitational in Norman, Okla. at 5 p.m. The men's golf team kicks off its season Sept. 20 when they host the UTA/Waterchase Invitational.
