ARLINGTON, Texas – This week in Mavericks athletics features a cross-town rivalry trip, the first ever Western Athletic Conference match-up for UT Arlington, and a wrap-up of play in Kiawah Island.

Volleyball faces cross-town rival TCU
The women’s volleyball team (4-7) travels to Fort Worth to take on Texas Christian University (7-1) of the Big 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the TCU University Recreational Center. The Mavs have not faced off against the Horned Frogs since 2009 and hold an overall advantage head-to-head of 6-4. The Mavericks are coming off a weekend in which it hosted the Hilton Invitational at College Park Center and went 1-2.

"Moving forward into this week, I think we need to remember that all of our hitters can be really successful when we get into a rhythm and put balls into the target area," women’s volleyball coach Diane Seymour said.

After taking on the Frogs on Tuesday, the Mavericks travel to Louisiana Tech (3-8) on Saturday for its first ever conference game while a part of the WAC. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Men’s golf wraps up play in South Carolina
The men’s golf team finishes off play at the Kiawah Island Invitational today and tomorrow. The team ended the opening day of the three-day event in 11th place.

Julia Kunzenbacher is the highest UTA player on the leaderboard. The freshman is tied for 21st with a 4-over 76. UTA sophomore Cash Wilkerson (77) is tied for 28th.

"We have a lot of talent here,” men’s golf coach Jay Reese said. “If we eliminate the doubles and triples we're sitting in about third or fourth place. We've got to prove we can get the ball in play. I expect us to play well tomorrow and be competitive."

Cross country begins 2012 campaign
UTA men’s cross country team opened up its 2012 schedule with a perfect score at the UTA Season Opener at Vandergriff Park Saturday morning.

Arlington native Virgilio Martinez cruised to victory in his first collegiate start, as the freshman posted an impressive time of 14:55.8 over the men's 5K race.

“It was a lot of fun," Martinez said. "Winning my first race gives me a lot of motivation. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."

The women finished third in the same meet.

Sophomore Hannah Nilsson paced the Mavericks with a 13th-place finish. She posted a time of 11:36.9 over the 2-mile circuit. A pair of freshmen, Gabriela Alfonzo (11:40.7) and Katelyn Hayward(11:41.7) finished 15th and 16th, respectively.
