ARLINGTON, Texas - The season opening tournament for the UT Arlington men's and women's tennis teams begins today as they look to start of the season on the right foot. This tournament, being held in Midland, Texas, includes teams from around the country, such as UCLA, Pepperdine, Texas, TCU, Texas Tech, Florida, and Miami. The Mavericks have a challenge ahead of them since 6 of 7 of the teams invited are ranked nationally in the top 25. Both teams were 0-1 against nationally ranked programs last year but the teams have been working hard to improve from last seasons final record.
The women's squad finished last season with a record of 17-7. Maria Martinez-Romer finished the season with a team best 21-2 and looks to improve upon that this year. Martinez-Romer also broke into the National Preseason Singles Rankings earlier this week and is number 112 in the nation.
The men's team finished the season 9-13 but compiled a home record of 7-4. The Mavericks have 13 home matches near the end of the season this year and look to use that home court advantage as a stepping stone to the SLC Tournament.
