ARLINGTON, Texas – With the fall semester well underway, the 2017-18 season for UTA intercollegiate athletic teams is starting to hit full stride and optimism remains at an all-time high.
Maverick sports teams continue to perform at a high level in competition, in the classroom and in the community.
Last season UTA sports teams won four Sun Belt Conference championships, continue to graduate student-athletes at a rate that is the third-highest among Division I public institutions in the state of Texas and earned the program’s second-straight Sun Belt SAAC Community Service Champion award.
More than half of UTA’s 220 student-athletes were recognized by the Sun Belt as members of the league’s Commissioner’s List and Academic Honor Roll. 30 earned all-league honors in their sport. Seven were honored with special conference awards for competitive success. And, men’s basketball then-junior Kevin Hervey was named the league’s overall Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
With continued commitment and investment toward providing its student-athletes with first-class support services, facilities and resources, UTA director of athletics Jim Baker is excited about the positive direction of the program.
“We have talented, motivated and driven student-athletes who expect to succeed in everything they do,” said Baker. “With the enhancements we’ve made into the program over the last few years, we feel confident we are providing the tools they need to achieve their goals and be successful in and out of competition.”
