The UT Arlington student-athletes are spreading the holiday spirit to the nation's armed forces through the "1,000 Holiday Wishes for Our Troops" program.

The project is the brainchild of Orange, Calif., native Shauna Fleming in 2004, Then a high school student, Fleming started the letter-writing campaign, "A Million Thanks." Her goal was to send one million thank you letters and emails to U.S. military members serving around the world. Last year, then Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Richard B. Myers challenged Fleming to set a goal of 2.6 million letters, which symbolically would give each military man and woman serving in the U.S. Armed Forces a written thank you.

At UT Arlington, the project is being led by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The UT Arlington SAAC is comprised of anywhere from two to four representatives from each men's and women's athletics teams.

"(The SAAC) discussed different projects and once we saw this one, we knew it was something we wanted to be a part of," said Zack Reeves, board president of the SAAC at UT Arlington. "Our troops have made tremendous sacrifices for our country. Many will be away from their families this Christmas. Our hope these cards will provide moral support and a way of appreciation for their service."

Individuals wanting to participate in the project can come to the Gilstrap Athletic Center, 1309 W. Mitchell St. and sign a card before December 12.
