HOUSTON – Four UT Arlington athletes kicked off the outdoor track and field season by competing at the Shirley Crowe Combined Events hosted by Rice on Wednesday and Thursday.
For the men, Brandon Blanchard finished fifth in the decathlon with 6,415 points. His score was the third-highest point total of his UTA career. Meanwhile, John Frnka claimed eighth with 6,035 points, his second-best total ever.
Highlights of the two-day meet included a third-place showing by Blanchard in the high jump (1.90m) as well as a third-place finish by Frnka in the discus (38.91m).
On the women’s side, Shae Johnson was the Mavericks’ top performer. She placed sixth with 4,647 points, setting a new personal-best mark by nearly 300 points. Freshman Charra Elliott took 13th (3,899) in her first collegiate heptathlon.
Johnson’s efforts included a victory in the 200m (24.90) and a runner-up placement in the long jump (5.56m). Ellliott’s top finish was fourth in the high jump (1.63m).
The rest of the Mavs’ track and field team will be competing Friday at the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth.
