FORT WORTH, Texas -- Four men won events Friday to highlight UT Arlington's efforts at the outdoor season-opening TCU Invitational. Both the men's and women's teams had fine showings as the teams began the transition from indoor to outdoor action.
Roland Sales continued his strong sophomore season by winning the high jump with a mark of 6-10.75 (2.10m), which was just shy of his personal best.
Staying in the field events, Omar Barnes was victorious in the triple jump with a leap of 46-07.50 (14.21m).
UTA's success wasn't limited to the field, as the Mavericks fared well on the track as well. Craig Lautenslager won the 1500 meters with a clocking of 4:03.37, while Ryan Tilotta won the 3000 meters in 8:46.12.
Other top finishes for the Mavs included Sheldon Moss in the 400 meters (2nd, 48.54), Brandon Waller in the long jump (2nd, 23-07.50), Renan Palma in the 110m hurdles (3rd, 14.22) and Tobi Fawehinmi in the long jump (3rd, 23-06.25).
For the women, newcomer Noemie Forget placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 12-04 (3.76m). The clearance was the fourth-best mark in school history.
Another strong showing came from freshman Tamerah Gorham, who was the runner up in the 800 meters with an impressive early-season time of 2:10.81.
Select UTA athletes will return to action at the prestigious 87th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Wednesday through Saturday. The Mavericks also will participate in the three-day Bobcat Invitational beginning Thursday.
