T&F: U.S. great Spearmon to assist at coaching clinic

Jan. 11, 2018

ARLINGTON, Texas – UTA track and field coach John Sauerhage has announced that former U.S. Olympian Wallace Spearmon will be one of the featured assistants at next week’s DFW/UTA Track & Field Clinic.

Spearmon was a three-time USA Track & Field outdoor champion, winning the 200 meters at the USATF Championships in 2006 (19.90), 2010 (19.77) and 2012 (19.82). He reached the 200m finals at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and placed fourth in the event at the 2012 London Olympics.

Spearmon won the silver medal in the 200m at the 2005 World Outdoor Championships and grabbed the bronze medal in 2007 and 2009. He has a personal best of 19.65 seconds for the distance, which makes him the eighth fastest 200m runner of all-time.

An All-American at Arkansas, Spearmon was a two-time NCAA outdoor champion in the 200 meters and also won the 2005 indoor event. Despite running for the Razorbacks, Spearmon has strong ties to the UTA track program.

During his professional career, he trained at Maverick Stadium and also competed multiple times at the Bobby Lane Invitational. In March of 2012, he set a stadium record in the 200m with a clocking of 19.95. It was the earliest in an outdoor season that anyone had ever run a sub-20 time in the northern hemisphere.

At the clinic, Spearmon will assist with sprint instruction, helping with starts and participating in the learn-by-doing portion of the lesson.

“We are so excited to have Wallace join us this year,” Sauerhage said. “His expertise as an athlete and his ability to understand and relate to kids and coaches alike make him a perfect addition to our group.”

This year’s clinic will also feature lectures and demonstrations from some of the area’s most successful and respected high school and college coaches, including a pair of UIL state championship coaches in Southlake Carroll’s Justin Leonard and Manvel’s Kendrick Crumedy.

The Friday night session (Jan. 19) will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn Dallas/Arlington South, while the Saturday morning and afternoon sessions (Jan. 20) will provide coaches on-site training at Maverick Stadium, the home of the UTA track and field and cross country programs, which have won 31 conference team championships under Sauerhage since 1995.

The cost is $75. A special rate for those needing hotel accommodations may be made at the Hilton Garden Inn Dallas/Arlington South by calling (817) 556-8233. For more information or to register for the clinic, call (817) 272-5825 or visit UTAMavs.com.
