T&F: Track teams to open season Saturday

Jan. 12, 2018

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UTA men's and women's indoor track and field teams will get the 2018 indoor season underway Saturday when the Mavericks compete in Texas A&M's Ted Nelson Invitational at the Gilliam Indoor Stadium.

"We are excited to get underway," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "There obviously will be highs and lows at the first meet, but looking forward, we are optimistic that we will have two strong teams once again."

This is the first of four indoor meets leading up to the Sun Belt Conference Championships (Feb. 19-20) in Birmingham, Ala. The UTA men are the reigning conference champions, while the women placed as the league runner up last year.

Both teams have increased depth throughout their rosters, and more than a dozen true freshmen will be donning Maverick uniforms for the first time when the College Station meet begins on Saturday afternoon. However, the teams also boast individuals who brought home lofty honors in the indoor season a year ago.

For the women, Astrid Rosvall burst onto the scene by claiming SBC Women's Freshman of the Year honors. At the league meet, Rosvall won the 800 meters and finished second in the mile run by just .01.

Joel Duren, who was named the SBC's Most Outstanding Track Performer and the High Point Scorer, paced the men in 2017. Duren stood atop the Sun Belt podium twice after claiming victories in the mile and the 3000 meters.

One other league indoor champ returns for the men, as Erik Martinsson snagged the title in the 800m.

"We think we will be able to compete at the top of the conference," Sauerhage said. "You never know what you are up against, but we hope that we will be able to rise to the occasion."

UTA will face some strong competition on Saturday. Schools competing alongside the Mavs will be Texas A&M, Abilene Christian, Army West Point, Clemson, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State and UTSA.

The meet will be live streamed on the SEC Network+. Live results will be available at FlashResults.com.

Field events will begin at noon. Running event prelims are slated to start at 12:30 p.m., while the finals will kick off at 2 p.m.
