ARLINGTON, Texas - With the calendar turning to February and the Western Athletic Conference Championships now just three weeks away, the UT Arlington men's and women's indoor track and field teams will continue their preparations by competing in Wichita State's Varsity Apartments Invitational this weekend.
One major difference this year in the Mavericks' preparation routine revolves around the structure of the conference meet. In the Southland Conference, athletes needed to meet qualifying standards during the regular season in order to gain entry into specific events. This year, WAC rules do not limit entries based on performance, but rather the league limits the squad size for the conference meet.
That switch means a difference in strategy for coaches as they consider how to maximize their potential with a limited number of participants.
"This is a very important meet for us," head coach John Sauerhage said. "We have to figure out which 28 men and which 28 women can help us the most at conference. That's the bottom line, and this week is a big part of our overall plan."
Teams scheduled to compete include: UT Arlington, Wichita State, Oklahoma, Sam Houston State, Missouri State, Nebraska-Omaha, Doane College and Iowa Central Community College.
The Varsity Apartments Invitational will take place Friday and Saturday in Wichita, Kan. For detailed meet information and live results, visit www.goshockers.com.
