ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington’s Emil Blomberg and Ashly Wright have been named the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Men’s and Women’s Track Athletes of the Week, the league office announced today. Both senior runners turned in standout performances Saturday at the University of Nebraska’s adidas Classic.
Blomberg, a native of Jarfalla, Sweden, finished runner up in the mile with a time of 2:07.33, which ranks as the best in the Sun Belt Conference this year by seven seconds. It also is the second-fastest mile in UTA history, just .21 off the school record, which was set nearly 30 years ago (1986). Last year, he was selected as the Men’s Most Outstanding Track Athlete at the 2014 SBC Indoor Championships and later was named Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week on April 23.
On the women’s side, Wright won the 800 meters with the top time in the Sun Belt Conference this year (2:12.39). The product of Beaumont, Texas, also helped her team to a third-place finish in the 4x400 relay. The relay team’s time of 3:46.32 is the best in the league by nearly three full seconds and ranks as the third-best effort in school history. Wright shared the SBC weekly award with Arkansas State’s Kristina Knott.
UTA is next in action at the Varsity Apartments Invitational on Feb. 14. It will be the final event for the Mavericks prior to the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships (Feb. 23-24) in Birmingham, Ala.
