ARLINGTON, Texas – Following a week off from competition, the UTA track and field teams will return to action Thursday and Friday at the Dunamis Sports Group’s Indoor College Classic I and II.
The meets, which will be run as separate competitions over the two days, are special to the Mavericks for a couple reasons. First, they will serve as the final tune-ups of the season prior to the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. Second, the first-ever track events at The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, are the first indoor track events in North Texas in 30 years.
The Ford Center serves as the Dallas Cowboys indoor practice facility and seats 12,000. The brand-new track is a state-of-the-art surface.
“This is exciting for us to be competing at an amazing facility so close to home,” UTA coach John Sauerhage said. “To have indoor track return to the Metroplex is very special and is a great opportunity for our program.”
With the addition of the Frisco facility, UTA’s five meets were all within three hours of Arlington. The Mavericks twice traveled to College Station, once to Norman, Okla., and now will make the 40-mile drive to Frisco twice. As a result, the team had to travel less than 1,300 miles round-trip to complete their regular season, and all five are high-quality meets.
“This week is the final chance for our athletes to show our coaching staff what they can do,” Sauerhage said. “The conference meet is less than two weeks away, so this is crunch time.”
Thursday’s action begins at 11 a.m. More than 25 college teams will be competing, and more than 3,000 athletes will descend on Frisco, which also hosts a high school meet on Saturday.
Among the highest-profile teams competing with UTA on Thursday are Texas Tech, Houston and SMU. Live results may be found here.
The 2017 Sun Belt Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships are scheduled for May 12-14 at Maverick Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Ticket information will be available at UTAMavs.com.
