FRISCO, Texas – Helen Falda broke the school record in the women’s pole vault in a winning effort and Erik Martinsson claimed the men’s 800-meter title to highlight UTA’s efforts Friday at the Dunamis College Classic II.
Falda, a freshman from Italy, has now set a new UTA standard three times in four meets this year. On Friday, she set a personal best by topping 13 feet, 9 inches (4.20m). In addition to taking first place in the event, she matched the 10th-best mark in the NCAA this season.
Martinsson grabbed a win in the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.67. It was his third 800m race this season and third victory. On Friday, he won the 400 meters in Frisco.
A pair of men reached the finals in the 60-meter hurdles with strong showings. Emeka Nwangwu placed fourth (8.03), while Petter Gustafsson was seventh (8.07).
In the field, Tobi Fawehinmi landed third in the men’s long jump (7.28m), surpassing the 23-foot mark. On the women’s side, Tori Carter finished fourth in the high jump by topping 5 feet, 4 inches (1.63m).
In women’s sprints, Taylor Davis had a bronze-medal placement in the 400 meters (56.76) and Victoria Rimpsey was sixth in the 60 meters (7.55). Additionally, two women placed among the top eight in the 200 meters. Alexis Baldwin was seventh in 25.05, one spot ahead of Chassity Love (25.07).
In distance events, Joel Duren was fourth in the men’s 3000 meters (8:35.91), while Tori Shelton was seventh in the women’s mile (5:10.87).
UTA is next in action Feb. 20-21 at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
