ARLINGTON, Texas – For the third straight week, a member of the UTA track and field program has earned a weekly honor from the Sun Belt Conference. This time, the winner came from the men’s team and was issued based on efforts on the track.
Junior Erik Martinsson was voted the SBC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week after winning the 800 meters at the Texas Tech Shootout in a personal-best time of 1:49.11. His clocking is the fastest time by more than a second in the Sun Belt this season.
In addition, Martinsson's time ranks third in school history, and his converted time of 1:48.80 ranks 18th nationally. Following the conference meets this month, the top 16 individuals in the 800 meters will qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
This is the first weekly honor of Martinsson’s career. UTA’s Alexus Henry was tabbed the SBC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week each of the two previous weeks.
The Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships will be held Monday and Tuesday in Birmingham, Ala. Martinsson enters the meet ranked first in the 800 meters and second in the 400m.
