ARLINGTON, Texas - The Sun Belt Conference announced its end of year awards for Men's Indoor Track & Field on Friday, and team champion UT Arlington claimed two of the four honors voted on by the league's head coaches.
Blomberg and Sauerhage blew away the competition in the school's first SBC Track and Field Championship en route to the Mavericks' first team title since 2000. UTA scored 185 points to outpace two-time defending champion WKU (149) by 36 points. The Mavs' overall point total broke a 20-year-old conference meet record.
On Tuesday, Blomberg took home high point scorer honors from the meet. The junior from Sweden totaled 28 points by virtue of two wins and a runner-up showing. He was victorious in the mile run and the 3000 meters, and then missed a victory in the 5000m by just .06.
For Sauerhage, the indoor men's coaching honor was the seventh of his career. He has now amassed a total of 24 conference coach of the year awards between men's and women's cross country as well as the indoor and outdoor track seasons.
The men have won the first two legs of the Sun Belt's "triple crown." A conference championship in the outdoor season would mark the first time in program history that the men won all three titles in the same academic year.
