T&F: Henry grabs top-10 finish at NCAA meet

March 9, 2018

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - UTA's Alexus Henry finished in a tie for 10th place in the high jump Friday night at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Henry advanced to the third round of the event inside Texas A&M's Gilliam Indoor Stadium. She was one of 10 competitors to clear the first height (1.76m, 5-9 ¼) on one try. Henry then dramatically topped the second bar (1.81m, 5-11 ¼) on her third and final try.

The junior ultimately bowed out of the competition after missing all three attempts at 1.84 meters (6-0 ½). Earlier this season she became the only woman in school history to ever top the 6-foot mark.

Henry will become the first UTA female to claim first- or second-team indoor All-America honors since Ashely Dorsey accomplished the feat in the shot put in 2002. She will join Mishael Bertrand (800m - 2000), Dorsey (shot put - 2001, 2002), Marsha French (shot put - 2000) and Marion Meyer (pole vault - 1998) as UTA women's indoor All-Americans.

"We are so proud of everything that Alexus accomplished this season," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "She was tremendous all year long, and we are very excited to see what she can do outdoors."

During the indoor season, the native of Bridge City, Texas, set school records in both the high jump (6-1 ¼) and the pentathlon (3,895 points). Her best high jump clearance ranked sixth in the NCAA during the regular season.

Last month, Henry won the pentathlon at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships and was the runner up in the high jump. Her 18 points at the league meet were the most by any field event athlete. As a result, she shared Sun Belt Women's Outstanding Field Performer honors.

Henry and UTA will open the outdoor season next Saturday (March 17) at the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth.
