AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Romain Martin, the runner up in the Texas Relays decathlon last season, is in second place after a strong showing in the first five events of the 2013 meet.
Martin has 3,985 points, which is 234 points out of the top spot currently held by Duke's Curtis Beach. He is seven points clear of Texas' Isaac Murphy and 72 ahead of fourth-place Marcus Nilsson of UCLA.
Martin's best performance on Wednesday came in the high jump, where he cleared 6-08.75 (2.05m) to win the competition and earn 850 points. In addition, he posted a time of 10.90 in the 100 meters to achieve his highest single-event point total (883).
Martin also competed in the shot put (3rd, 44-02.75), 400 meters (50.20) and long jump (13th, 22-01.00) at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Making his Texas Relays debut in the decathlon for the Mavericks is junior John Frnka, who is in 21st place.
The decathlon will finish up Thursday with the final five events--110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1000m. In addition, field and running events will begin. Live results available at www.TexasSports.com.
