T&F: UTA heads to Baylor Invitational

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UT Arlington men's and women's track teams will take a bevy of athletes to Waco Saturday as the squads return to action at the Baylor Invitational.

"We are excited to be competing again this week at another great meet," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "We are just a little over a month away from the Sun Belt Conference Championship, so we are getting to a crucial time in the season. We're looking forward to seeing how we perform on Saturday."

The event will feature competitors from UTA, Baylor, North Texas, Fresno State, South Florida, Arkansas State, Cal State Northridge, Texas Southern, Tulane, Texas State, Prairie View A&M, Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Houston.

UTA currently boasts a number of athletes in the top-50 on the NCAA West Qualifying List for the NCAA regional meet. For the women, high jumper Alexus Henry leads the way, ranking 11th with a high jump clearance of 5 feet, 10 inches. She also is 34th in the heptathlon with 4,662 points.

In addition, Tricia Williams is 31st in the NCAA West in the shot put with a season-best mark of 49 feet, 1 3/4 inches.

On the track, Katelyn Hayward holds down the team's best position, as she is currently 23rd in the West in the steeplechase (10:36.42). In addition, Tamerah Gorham sits 41st in the 800 meters (2:09.81).


 

 

For the men, Roland Sales is listed 11th in the region in the high jump with a mark of 7 feet, 1/2 inch. Also among the West's top 20 is Tobi Fawehinmi in the triple jump (14th; 50 feet, 2 3/4 inches). David Brefo is 39th in the triple jump with a leap of 47 feet, 11 1/4 inches.

Staying in the field, Emeka Nwangwu ranks 43rd in the West in the men's 110m hurdles with a time of 14.53.

The meet will take place at the Clyde Hart Track & Field Stadium in Waco. Field events begin at 10 a.m., while running events will begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth, ages 2-17.
