WALNUT, Calif. - Katelyn Hayward highlighted the first day of the Mt. SAC Relays, setting a school record in the steeplechase. It was part of a strong day for the Mavericks' distance crew.
Her time, 10:48.03, in the event also ranks among the nation's elite. She now is among the top-48 times in the NCAA West Qualifying List.
In addition, Sydney Hampton and Hannah Nilsson each posted top-5 UTA times in the 1500 meters. Hampton had the fourth-fastest clocking in school history (4:29.96) in the race. Nilsson's time of 4:31.48 ranks as the fifth best in school annals.
On the men's side, Anthony Hilliman narrowly missed a top-5 time in the same event. His mark of 3:53.99 was less than 2/10ths of a second off the fifth-best time in school history.
The Mavericks have two more days of competition at the prestigious meet and also will begin competing in the Beach Invitational on Friday.
