ARLINGTON, Texas -- UT Arlington swept the Sun Belt Conference Male and Female Track Athlete of the Week accolades Wednesday, courtesy of senior Emil Blomberg and junior Gabriela Alfonzo.
Alfonzo obliterated her own school standard in the women's 5000m with a time of 16:32.39 at the Mt. SAC Relays. Her clocking is the best in the Sun Belt Conference by seven seconds and ranks 45th in the West Region and 100th nationally.
Alfonzo's fifth-place time also qualified her for the Pan Am Games for her native Venezuela. Her run was 20 seconds faster than her record set less than a month ago.
Blomberg smashed his own school record in the 3000m steeplechase in a fourth-place finish, second among collegians, at the Mt. SAC Relays. His time of 8:36.98 currently ranks fifth nationally, second on the West Region Qualifying List and first in the Sun Belt Conference.
His time was eight seconds faster than his personal-best and previous school-record mark, which was set a year ago. It is the second time he has been honored with the league's outdoor accolade during his career.
