T&F: UTA set for NCAA Championships on Wednesday

ARLINGTON, Texas -- UT Arlington's NCAA participants are primed and ready for action at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which kick off Wednesday in Eugene, Ore. In all, the Mavericks have five different athletes competing in a total of four events, three individual races and one relay.

"We have a tremendous group of young men representing UT Arlington this week," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "We have had some great training in preparation for this meet, and we are excited to see how our guys compete against the best in the nation."

The semifinals of the 4x100 relay will kick off the meet's running events at 6 p.m. (CT) Wednesday. The UTA quartet will consist of freshman Christian Clark and a trio of juniors, Cameron Newson, Quentin Butler and Clayton Vaughn. Only Vaughn (2011) has ever participated previously in the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Later that night (7:30 p.m.), Vaughn will run in the semis of the 100 meters. His busy week will resume on Thursday, when he takes part in the semifinals of the 200 meters at 6 p.m.

Vaughn is one of 12 individuals to qualify for the NCAA Championships in both the 100m and 200m. In addition, the junior is one of only five to rank among the top 14 in both events.

UTA's other individual competitor, Emil Blomberg, will compete in the semifinals of the 3000m steeplechase on Thursday at 7:35 p.m. It will also mark the NCAA finals debut for the junior distance runner.

The semifinals of each of the sprint events will consist of three heats. Eight, the top two from each heat plus the two next best times, will qualify for the final. The steeplechase semifinals with consist of two heats. Twelve runners, the top five from each heat plus the two next best times, will advance to the final.

The finals of the men's 100 meters are set for 7 p.m. Friday. The 4x100 relay finals are slated for Saturday at 4 p.m., while the 200 meters (4:40 p.m.) and steeplechase (4:55 p.m.).
