EUGENE, Ore. -- Quentin Butler, who completed his UT Arlington track career just two weeks ago in Eugene, Ore., qualified for the semifinals of the 100-meter dash at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Thursday night.
Butler ran a personal-best time of 9.96 at the same Hayward Field track that he competed on at the NCAA Championships. He finished second in his heat and qualified with the ninth-best time overall.
Teammate Clayton Vaughn missed the final qualifying spot by just .01. Vaughn ran a time of 10.10, finishing fifth in the opening heat. His time was ranked 16th overall, but only the top three in each heat, plus the next four fastest times advanced.
Butler will compete in the semifinal round Friday at 7:15 p.m. (CT). The finals, which will include the top four finishers in each of the two semifinal heats, are set for later in the evening (9:30 p.m.).
