ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington coach John Sauerhage has officially announced the signing of distance runner Bailey Balmer (Yardley, Penn.), who will compete in women’s cross country and track beginning in the fall of 2016.
Balmer is the daughter of former Mavericks’ distance standout Jimmy Balmer, who ran at UTA from 1988-93. It will be the first time that Sauerhage will have coached a former athlete as well as his or her daughter or son.
Bailey Balmer is a senior Pennsbury High School, which has won back-to Pennsylvania state championships. She has also competed at the Nike Cross Nationals and will be competing in the event again in December. The UTA commit owns a personal-best 3200-meter time of 11:18.
"Bailey not only comes from a tradition-rich high school cross country program, but also from a very athletic family," Sauerhage said. "She has a very strong work ethic, and has a bright future ahead of her. We’re excited to have Bailey join us next year."
Jimmy Balmer won the Southland Conference cross country individual title in 1990, and also is the school record holder in the indoor 3-mile run. He was a member of teams that won league team titles in indoor and outdoor track and field in 1990, 1991 and 1992.
