TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The UTA men’s and women’s cross country teams wrapped up their 2017 regular seasons on Friday morning at the highly competitive Crimson Classic. The men placed 10th among 26 teams with 305 points, while the women were 20th in a 30-team field (489).
Justin Domangue continued his impressive sophomore campaign with his fourth top-10 finish in as many events this fall. Domangue took 10th among a field of 224 runners. His time in the 8k race held at the Harry Pritchett Running Park was 24:40.9.
Joel Duren was the next Maverick to cross the line, placing 34th in 25:26.1. Duren moved up 10 spots over the race’s final 3,000 meters.
Tyler Forde (26:11.5) was the third finisher for the team and came in 88th place overall. Side-by-side finishers Grayson Birka (108th, 26:25.7) and Cole Klashinsky (109th, 26:26.3) rounded out the UTA scorers.
On the women’s side, Tori Shelton led the way for UTA once again. The senior grabbed 29th place among collegians with a time of 21:29.2 in the 6k event.
Astrid Rosvall also landed in the top quarter of the 269-person field. The redshirt freshman had a clocking of 22:00.4 to place 63rd.
“Justin and Tori continue to perform at a high level,” UTA coach John Sauerhage said. “We are going to be tested at conference, and we will have to be ready if we are going to repeat as conference champs on the men’s side. The women can have a great conference meet if we can put together five solid performances.”
UTA is off from competition until Saturday, Oct. 28, when the Mavericks run in the Sun Belt Conference Championships in Boone, N.C. Since joining the league in 2013, the Mavs have claimed three conference titles (2013, 2015, 2016), while the women claimed the SBC crown in 2014.
