ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington freshman Virgilio Martinez has been tabbed the Western Athletic Conference men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the league office has announced. He is the first UTA athlete to be honored by the school's new conference.
Martinez made his collegiate debut by winning the UTA Season Opener on Saturday with a time of 14:55.8 over the 5K race. He helped the Mavericks claim the team title by securing the top five spots en route to a perfect score of 15.
The native of Arlington is the first UTA men's cross country runner to earn a conference weekly award since Cody Widener took home the Southland Conference honor on Sept. 14, 2010.
Martinez and the Mavericks return to action Saturday morning at the Louisiana Tech Mook 4.
