ARLINGTON, Texas - Following an impressive performance at the UTA Season Opener, the UT Arlington women's cross country team has vaulted into the top 10 in the South Central Regional Rankings, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The women, who were unranked in the preseason poll, moved all the way to No. 8 in the inaugural regular season rankings. UTA's move tied for the largest jump by any team in the nation this week. As a result, the Mavs are now the top-ranked Sun Belt Conference team, ahead of No. 14 Texas State.
At its home meet on Saturday, the UTA women finished second behind only SMU, who is ranked fourth regionally. Sophomore Gabriela Alfonzo, who placed fifth, paced a group of five Mavericks that finished among the top 10.
On the men's side, the Mavericks dropped four spots to 13th in today's poll. Sun Belt foes UALR (No. 9) and Louisiana-Monroe (No. 12) are also ranked in the South Central Region.
The women's and men's teams will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28 at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla.
