ARLINGTON, Texas – After a standout performance at the prestigious Chile Pepper Festival, UTA senior Tori Shelton has been voted the Sun Belt Conference Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
The weekly honor is the first of her career. In addition, Shelton becomes the first Maverick (female or male) to be selected by the league’s coaches this season.
On Saturday, Shelton placed 16th overall in the College Division 5k and was seventh among all Division I competitors. The College Division field consisted of 381 runners, including 91 Division I athletes.
The Arlington product finished the 5k race with a time of 17:30.7, and was the first Maverick across the line for the third time in as many races this season. She has placed among the top 30 in all three meets in 2017.
“We are very proud of Tori,” UTA coach John Sauerhage said. “She’s enjoyed a tremendous season thus far, and we are looking forward to watching her close out her UTA cross country career in a big way over the next six weeks.”
As a team, UTA placed 11th among the 45 institutions in Fayetteville, Ark. The Mavericks took fifth among the 10 fellow Division I schools.
The Mavericks will return to action Friday, Oct. 13, at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala. It is the final regular season meet of the year for UTA.
