UTA Athletic Director reflects on a memorable week

March 24, 2017

Five years ago, I was fortunate to become the athletic director here at UTA. In fact, my first day on the job was the exact same day we opened the state-of-the-art College Park Center. Even though it seems like yesterday, we have come a long way from that grand opening just a few years ago.

Since the CPC opened in February, 2012, there have been several memorable events. But, this week’s two National Invitation Tournament games in three days are right at the top of the list. I could not be prouder of the way our community turned out to support the Mavericks! .

A combined 12,000 fans came to support our men’s basketball team in two of the five highest attended UTA basketball games ever. An average of 84 percent of the CPC’s seats were filled, which was the second-highest average of any facility in the nation among teams that hosted multiple NIT games. .

I want to take this opportunity to say that I could not be more thankful for the support our team has received this season. From an energetic and excited Maverick student body to our loyal fans and the entire Arlington community. The game day environment in the CPC this week as good as any arena in the country and it really shows how great our program can be.

Obviously, we are disappointed the men and women’s seasons are over. But, I am extremely proud of what both programs accomplished this year. This has been a defining season for both programs, one that set the standard for the future.

With just two months left in our athletic season, we look forward to keeping the momentum going. This weekend, we host the annual Bobby Lane Invitational in Maverick Stadium and we host conference softball and baseball series against Georgia Southern. In May, we have another opportunity to showcase our campus and community when we host the Sun Belt Track and Field Championships.

This is a such great time to be a Maverick and my staff and I am committed to making this the BEST program around and grow it to heights never reached before.

If the last few days are any indication, we are well on our way to doing that!
