Feb. 6, 2005
EDINBURG, Texas - Senior Jake Baxter struck out eight and allowed only two hits over five innings as Texas-Arlington recorded its first shutout of the season, 3-0, over Southland Conference rival Texas State in a non-conference contest at the Texas-Pan American Tournament.
Blake Pierson earned his first save of the season as he came on in the sixth inning and allowed two hits over four innings with one strikeout.
The victory moved UTA to 2-1 on the season and is the 100th coaching victory for Jeff Curtis at UTA. The loss drops TXST to 2-1.
The Mavs got the offense rolling in the first inning as Dane Ryan and Scott Williams drew back-to-back walks with one out. Justin Stevens followed with an RBI single to left field and Ryan Nelson hit the next pitch off the left center field wall for a run-producing double.
The Bobcats threatened in the eighth inning as they loaded the bases with one out against Pierson before Kyle Anson grounded into the inning ending 4-6-3 double play to kill the threat.
UTA added an insurance run in the home half of the eighth as Nelson's fourth hit of the game was a double to center field. Kyle Thomason came in to pinch run for Nelson and scored as Boomer Welles delivered a pinch hit single through the right side.
Nelson supplied the offense with two doubles and two singles in four plate appearances. Stevens added a pair of hits and a run batted in.
Bobby Sawicki (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in 3.1 innings of work. He also walked three and hit two.
The Mavs return to action on Feb. 10 as they open their home season against Dallas Baptist. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
