DEFENSIVE FOILS MAVS UPSET BID OF #7 HUSKERS
Feb. 17, 2007
ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington pitching staff did what they needed to keep the Mavericks in the game and the offense came alive late in the game, but it was the defense that committed four errors and gave up three unearned runs in the first three innings that foiled the upset bid of #7 Nebraska in a 5-4 loss Saturday afternoon at the Arlington Hilton UTA Invitational at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavs offense was not without their chances as they failed to get the tieing run across the plate in the eighth and ninth innings after getting a runner into scoring position with one out.
The Huskers (2-1) took advantage of some Maverick generosity in the first inning as a pair of errors led to three unearned runs. Bryce Nimmo started the inning with a single to first and stole second. After a one-out walk to Ryan Wehrle, Nick Sullivan reached on a fielding error by the first baseman to load the bases. Jake Opitz drove in a run with a lineout to center before Jeff Lanning blooped an RBI single to right center. Andy Gerch drove in the final run on a misplayed fly ball to right field.
NU added a run in the third as Lanning singled into the hole at short. After a groundout advanced the runner, Thad Weber delivered an RBI single up the middle.
UTA (2-4) got a run back in the fifth as Ben Burum singled to right field and Kyle Rudy followed with a single through the left side. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, Mitch Putman delivered a pinch-hit RBI single through the left side.
The Huskers got the run back in the next inning as Wehrle hit the first pitch down the left-field line for a solo home run.
The Mavs answered back in the home-half of the sixth with a pair of runs of their own. Matthew Otteman started the inning with a single up the middle and went to second when the shortstop's throw went into the dugout. Danny Slinkman drove in the runner with a single down the right-field line. Burum put runners on the corner with a single to right field before Rudy delivered a run-producing single to right center.
UTA got within one run in the eighth inning as Leo Radkowski delivered a solo home run to left field.
The duo of Burum and Rudy led the offense by going 7-for-7 with Burum leading the way with four hits, including a pair of doubles. Otteman also added two hits in the Mavs 12 hit attack. Lanning led the Huskers with three hits.
Jeffrey Nollen (0-1) took the loss after giving up four runs, one earned, on four hits in 2.1 innings. Charlie Shirek (1-0) picked up the victory after allowing three runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings. Erik Bird pitch 1.2 scoreless innings to pick up the save.
The Mavs return to action tomorrow afternoon as they face New Mexico at 3:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
