ARLINGTON, Texas - Oregon State starter Jake Postlewait scattered four Texas-Arlington hits over 6.2 innings of work as the Beavers defeated the Mavericks 7-0 on the first day of the 2004 UTA Invitational at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Beavers (4-0) pushed a run across in the first inning as Mike Lissman blooped a single to shallow left field for the game's first run.
The Mavericks (2-3) had plenty of chances to get on the board early as they had runners on second and third with one out in the second inning and loaded the bases with one out in the third and failed to push a run across the plate.
OREST added a run in the fifth inning as Aaron Mathews hit a solo home run just over the glove of a leaping Paul Bruder.
The Beavers stretched their lead to four runs in the sixth inning as three base hits and base on balls led to the two runs. Paul Richie plated the first run with a single to right field that chased starter Jake Baxter from the game. Chris Kunda plated the second run with a grounder into the hole at short.
OREST right fielder Chris Campos added three more runs to the scoreboard in the eighth inning as he hit a mammoth shot over the wall in right field.
Baxter (0-2) took the loss after allowing four earned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. He struck out five and walked three while throwing 107 pitches, 64 for strikes. Postlewait improved to 2-0 on the season.
Kasey Baker was the only Maverick to collect two hits in the game. Jacoby Ellsbury and Jenkins each had two hits for the Beavers.
The Mavericks return to action tomorrow morning as they host Southwest Missouri State on the second day of the UTA Invitational at Clay Gould Ballpark.
