FRISCO, Texas - The Gonzaga Bulldogs jumped on UT Arlington with five runs in the first and eighth innings and the pitching staff enticed three double plays as the Mavericks fell 12-1 Thursday afternoon at the Southwest Baseball Classic.
The Bulldogs (3-7) scored early and often in the first inning as they sent eight hitters to the plate and pushed across five runs. Evan Wells started the rally with a hit by pitch and stolen base. Following a walk to Aaron McGuinness, Darin Holcomb delivered an RBI single to left field. Mark Castellitto followed with an RBI double to right center and Brian Winston delivered a sacrifice fly. Mark Ellis plated the final two runs with a home run to left field.
GU added to its lead in the third as Holcomb was hit by a pitch and stole second before scoring on Mike Terry's single to center field.
The Bulldogs added an unearned run in the seventh as Castellitto hit a two-out double off the bag at third and scored when Winston's fly ball to right field was misplayed.
GU brought the bats back out in the eighth as they got an RBI double from Wells, and RBI single from Holcomb and a three-run double from Castellitto.
Dillon Gee (1-2) took the loss as he gave up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits in seven innings of work. CJ McClure (1-0) picked up the victory as he allowed two hits and struck out one in two innings of relief.
Slinkman led the Mavs offense with a pair of hits and the only RBI.
The Mavs return to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Missouri State at 3 p.m. in the Southwest Diamond Classic in Frisco.
