Arlington, Texas – A five-run outburst by Missouri State in the ninth inning sunk UT Arlington 9-4 in the second game Saturday of the Hilton Invitational on Friday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks had taken a 4-3 lead through seven, finally breaking through against Bears starter Pierce Johnson. The righty held UTA hitless through five innings, as Missouri State led 3-0.
UTA added three runs in the seventh, with Beck's two-run RBI triple giving the Mavericks the lead. The bullpen took over from starter Collin Reynolds, but couldn't keep the Bears off board over the last two innings.
"I thought we battled well against a great pitcher," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "We just cannot continue to walk leadoff hitters with a lead.
"I thought our overall approach was much better today. We will learn from it and close out wins in the eighth and ninth innings with a lead."
The Mavericks (4-2) complete the three-day event Sunday afternoon against Stephen F. Austin.
