FORT WORTH, Texas -- The third-ranked TCU Horned Frogs used a seven-run fifth inning to post a 14-1 win over UTA baseball in seven innings, on Thursday night at Lupton Stadium.
UTA (3-3) opened the scoring with a solo shot from Noah Vaughan, but the Horned Frogs then scored the next 14 runs, including a seven-run fifth inning.
The game marked the first of a three-game midweek series between the two teams but the first three attempts to play the opener of the series were rained out, pushing the teams into a four game stretch over the next four days. TCU will host UC Irvine in a three-game set and UTA will host Wright State in a three-game set, with each starting on Friday.
LEADING THE MAVS
The Mavs were limited to three hits in the game, with Vaughan's second homer, coming on an 0-2 offering in the first inning, doing the most damage. Vaughan added two walks and has reached in six consecutive trips to the plate, including homering in two straight at-bats. Zac Cook and Josh Minjarez each added singles.
ON THE MOUND
UTA freshman right-hander David Moffat (0-1) made his second career start and his first since opening weekend. Moffat worked 2.2 innings, allowing five hits and four runs, walking three and striking out one on 66 pitches. After walking in a run with two outs and the bases juiced, UTA turned to freshman righty Carlos Tavera for his NCAA debut.
Tavera escaped the jam with a looking strikeout and worked a shutout fourth inning before a hit and two walks loaded the bases without an out to open the bottom of the fifth. The Mavs turned to lefty Jake Wilcox for his season debut. Wilcox got an out but allowed two walks before giving way to Andrew Gross for his UTA debut. Gross got two outs but issued a walk and allowed two hits, with two runs scoring.
TCU (5-2) freshman lefty Russell Smith made his NCAA debut with the first inning. The Horned Frogs then used Caleb Sloan, Austin Boyles, Augie Mihlbauer and Charles King in relief.
UTA will return to action on Friday, hosting Wright State at 3 p.m. CT at Clay Gould Ballpark.
HOW THEY SCORED
Top first: Vaughan got the Mavs on the board with a solo homer over the right-centerfield fence, his second of the year and the 11th of hi career. It marked his second consecutive game with a homer, also belting a jack on Monday vs. Stephen F. Austin.
Bottom first: TCU used back-to-back homers, from Luken Baker and Josh Watson, to take a 2-1 lead.
Bottom third: The Horned Frogs added on to their lead in the third, starting with a one-out single. A two-out knock and a walk loaded the bases before a wild pitch allowed a run to score. Consecutive walks forced in a second run in the inning and ended Moffat's outing.
Bottom fifth: TCU opened up the game in the fifth inning, loading the bases with two walks and a double. UTA turned to the bullpen without an out and the bases loaded, with the Mavs walking in two straight runs. Gross was greeted by a two-run single and a two-run double, with an RBI groundout forcing in the 11th run.
Bottom sixth: UTA walked two consecutive to open the sixth and then allowed consecutive singles to score the next two runs. A double scored a third run in the inning and ended West's outing.
