HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Jake Rife came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit RBI single in the top of the ninth inning as Washington scored two runs in the inning to defeat Texas-Arlington 6-5 at the First Hawai'i Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament at Les Murakami Stadium.

Bradley Boyer started the inning with a base on balls off UTA reliever Erik Cartmill. Dillon Gee came out of the bullpen and retired the next hitter on a flyball to left field before walking Matt Hague and getting another flyball out. After getting ahead 0-2 on Curt Rindal, the first baseman battled back and tied the game with an RBI single to right field to set up Rife's game-winning hit.

UTA made a small rally in the ninth as Adam Moore was hit with two outs and Ben Burum and Kyle Rudy followed with walks. David Newby got up in the count 3-1, but grounded out to third to end the game.

The Huskies (11-3) got on the board in the third inning as three straight singles to right field plated two runs. Michael Burgher started the one-out rally with a bloop single to right field and went to third on a successful hit-and-run off the bat of Ryan Anderson. After a stolen base, Hague plated both runners with a single to right field.

UTA (4-9) got on the board in the sixth as Daniel Rieder drew a leadoff walk, but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of David McLeod. Moore put runners in scoring position with a double to base of the wall in right field. McLeod would score on a wild pitch before Burum drove in a run with a groundout to second.

 

 

UW took the lead in the eighth inning as a pair of singles and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with one out. After a popout to second, the Huskies got a pinch-hit RBI single from Matt Lane and followed that up with a RBI single off the bat of Joey Dunn.

The Mavs took the lead in the home half of the inning as McLeod singled to right field and Moore was hit by a pitch. Burum drew a walk to load the bases with no outs before the next two batters were retired. Kyle Thomason drew a bases loaded walk and Danny Slinkman delivered a two-run pinch hit single back through the middle.

Gee (1-3) took the loss as he allowed one run on two hits in one inning of work. Elliott Cribby (1-1) earned the victory despite allowing two runs on one hit in 1.2 innings of work. Nick Hagadone earned his second save of the season as he walked two, but did not allow a run in one-third of an inning.

The Mavs return to the diamond tomorrow in the semifinals of First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament. Time and opponent to be determined following the conclusion of the Arkansas-Hawai'i contest to be played following the game against the Huskies.
