Arlington, Texas – Philip Incaviglia scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the 10th inning to lift UT Arlington to Friday night's 2-1 win over Houston Baptist at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks improved to 7-2 on the season after their second win over HBU. UTA beat the Huskies last weekend during the Hilton Invitational.
"We found a way to win tonight," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "It's a good win in that we didn't score a lot of runs and we found a way to win. Sometimes when you win close ones like that you can pick up a little momentum."
The winning run salvaged an inning where the Mavericks had the bases loaded with none out and leading hitter Preston Beck at the plate. Beck struck out and designated hitter Matt Shortall – another slugger off to a hot start – grounded into a fielder's choice with Daniel Garcia being gunned out at home.
The Mavericks were given a second life with HBU reliever Michael Schulle threw one in the dirt. The ball squirted away from catcher Asai Adame, who also bobbled it once he chased it down. Incaviglia scored easily and the Mavericks sprung from the dugout to celebrate the victory.
UTA starter John Beck worked eight solid innings, giving up only a solo home run to Jake Gonzalez in the eighth. The Mavericks' second reliever, Kennedy Winn, was just as impressive, working out of a jam with one out in the 10th.
The lefty got a strikeout on three pitches and induced a fly to left to end the inning, giving UTA another shot. The Mavericks took advantage of it … eventually.
The Mavericks are back in action against HBU on Saturday at 2 p.m. UTA also plays Texas A&M-Corpus Christi later in the day at 6:30.
