ARLINGTON, Texas - UT-Arlington failed to capitalize on opportunities early in the contest and #19 Baylor took advantage of every opportunity they had as they handed the Mavericks a 9-4 defeat Tuesday evening at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Bears (10-3) got on the board in the second inning as Kevin Russo ripped a double just inside the bag on the first pitch. After a sacrifice bunt, Tim Jackson drove in the run with a bloop single down the right field line.
The Mavs (4-12) threatened to score in the home-half of the second inning as they loaded the bases with nobody out, but failed to score. Justin Stevens started the inning with a base on balls and Danny Slinkman and Kyle Thomason followed with base hits. Kyle Rudy went down looking on a full-count pitch before Brock Wilson hit into a 2-3 double play.
BU put a three spot in the fourth inning as Jackson started the inning with a single up the middle and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Kevin Sevigny drove him in with a single to right field. Following a walk to Beamer Weems, Matt Sodolak drove in both runners with a double down the right field line.
The Bears added another run in the fifth as Fortenberry blooped a one-out double down the left field line. After advancing to third on a groundout off the pitchers leg, Seth Hammock drove in the run with a single into the hole at short.
UTA got a run in the sixth inning as Daniel Rieder started things with a double down the left field line and scored on Stevens' bloop single just inside the right-field line.
Fortenberry helped push the advantage back to five as he hit a one-out triple into the gap in right center and scored on Jeff Mandel's slow roller to third.
UTA got an unearned run back in the seventh as Kyle Thomason reached on a fielding error and came around to score on James Smith's pinch-hit RBI single to left field.
The Bears put their second three spot on the board in the eighth as a pair of walks set up and an RBI single off the bat of Dillon, an RBI groundout from Russo and an RBI double from Fortenberry.
UTA took advantage of some sloppy fielding from the Bears in the eighth to plate two runs. David McLeod started the inning with a single through the right side and went to second when Adam Moore was hit by a pitch. Smith's grounder to third was booted to load the bases before Slinkman followed on the next pitch with another error by the BU second baseman to score a run. BU got things together as they turned a 6-4-3 double play as the second run scored.
Kyle Gainley (0-3) took the loss as he allowed four runs on six hits in 3.2 innings. He struck out three and walked three. Randall Linebaugh (1-0) picked up the victory as he allowed just one run on four hits in six innings. He walked two and fanned five.
The Mavs return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host North Carolina-Asheville. First pitch has been changed to 3:30 p.m. due to the threat of rain in the Arlington area.
