Arlington, Texas – No. 21 Texas State scored two runs in the ninth inning to upend UT Arlington 5-3 in the opening of a three-game Southland Conference series Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks dropped to 9-6 overall and 0-1 in the league play after their fourth consecutive loss. The Bobcats (10-3, 1-0) have won eight straight.
The Mavericks took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third thanks to a series of free passes. Texas State starter Colton Turner issued five walks, allowing UTA to score twice without the benefit of a hit.
Bobcats right fielder Jeff McVaney opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second. Texas State tied the game with a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly McVaney.
Texas State scored in the top of the eighth, only to have the Mavericks match that run in the bottom of the inning. Michael Guerra scored the tying run thanks to a pair of Bobcats' errors with two outs.
Casey Kalenkosky scored the go-ahead run in the ninth for the Bobcats. He got on thanks to a one-out single, advanced with a walk and scored on Chad Nack's wild pitch.
UTA starter Collin Reynolds lasted six innings. The righty gave up two earned runs on four hits and four walks. Nack (0-2) took the loss by allowing both Texas State runs in the ninth.
The series is scheduled to continue Saturday with a 2 p.m. first pitch and conclude Sunday at 1 p.m. Make sure to check UTAMavs.com for possible changes in game times due to weather.
