Arlington, Texas - Ryan Walker had three hits and scored three runs as UT Arlington beat No. 21 Texas State 6-4 in Game 1 of a Sunday doubleheader at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Bobcats came back to win the nightcap 3-2 with a run in the ninth.
The Mavericks snapped a four-game losing streak in the opener, and came out of the three-game series at 10-7 overall and 1-2 in the Southland Conference. The Bobcats (11-4, 2-1) had won eight in a row coming into Sunday.
The Mavericks struck in the bottom of the first of Game 1 to take a 1-0 lead. Walker opened the game with a double down the right field line and scored on Michael Guerra's double down the left field line.
UTA added another run in the second on Walker's RBI single to score Greg McCall. Walker also scored in fifth and seventh innings.
Preston Beck homered off the right field foul pole in the right in the third to tie the game at 3-3. The Bobcats scored their trio of runs in the top of the inning on three hits, with an error and wild pitch from UTA aiding Texas State.
Lance Day (5-0) started for UTA and worked seven innings, giving up three earned runs. Bobcats starter Travis Ballew gave up five runs (three earned) in six innings.
