DEMONS SCORE SIX RUNS IN THE NINTH INNING FOR 9-8 VICTORY OVER MAVERCKS IN SLC SHOWDOWN

NATCHITOCHES, LOUISIANA...Northwestern State scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to come from five runs down for a 9-8 victory over Texas-Arlington in the Southland Conference opener for both teams.
The Demons (14-6, 1-0) started the inning with three straight singles before Anatole Vincent hit a three-run homer to left field to trim the lead to one run. After a double and a walk put runners on first and second, a throwing error by pitcher Charlie Coffey on a sacrifice allowed the tying run to score. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Coffey struck out the next batter. Josh Condone came into pitch and a passed by catcher Dustin Bozarth allowed the winning run to score.
The Mavericks (10-12, 0-1)struck first in the third inning as Kasey Baker laced a double off the left field wall with two outs to score Bozarth.
UTA added to its lead in the fourth inning as Ryan Roberts led off the inning with a single to center field and Hunter Pence reached on a bunt base hit down the third base line. After the runners advanced on a wild pitch, Paul Bruder delivered a double to the base of the center field wall to plate both runners. Scott Williams grounded out to second base advancing both runners. Bozarth singled off the glove of the first baseman scoring Bruder from third. Preston would come around to score on an error by the first baseman. Baker would follow with a run producing triple to right center field to score the fifth run of the inning.
The Demons plated a runner in the fifth inning as Steven Adams led off with a double to right center field and advanced to third on a fly out to center field. Anatole Vincent would plate Adams with a sacrifice fly to center field. Jeff Martin would follow with a walk and Alonzo Soliz would cut the lead to three runs with a home run to right center field.
In the seventh inning, Bozarth led off with a single to center field and advanced to second on a Baker sacrifice bunt. After a Taylor groundout to second advancing Bozarth, Roberts fisted a single to center field to score Bozarth. Roberts stole second and scored on a Pence single to center field before Pence was thrown out trying to advance to second ending the inning.
Phillip Martinez (1-0) picked up the win in relief by pitching a scoreless inning, while Wes Detwiler (2-1) took the loss by allowing two unearned runs in the ninth.
Baker led the offense with three hits, including two doubles and a triple, while Roberts, Pence and Bozarth each collected two hits apiece. Bozarth scored three runs and Bruder drove in three and Baker drove in two.
The Mavericks and Demons will play Game 2 tomorrow afternoon at Brown-Stroud Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
