NEWMAN LEADS MAVS TO 7-6 VICTORY
March 15, 2005
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Texas-Arlington center fielder Joe Newman went 2-for-3 with three RBIs to lead the Mavs to a 7-6 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first game of a doubleheader at Islander Field.
UTA (10-10) got on the board in the third inning as Nathan Warrick reached on an error with one out. Aaron Battle followed with an RBI double down the right field line and advanced to third on a throwing error by the second baseman. Ryan Nelson followed with a single up the middle to score Batlle. Justin Stevens advanced Nelson to second by drawing a walk before Daniel Macha delivered a two-out RBI single to right field.
The Islanders (14-10-1) got two runs back in the home half of the inning as Chuck Carter delivered a two-run home run to left field.
The Mavs pushed the lead to two runs in the fifth inning as Batlle started things with his second double of the game to right field. After Nelson moved Batlle over with a groundout to the right side and Stevens walked for the second time, Newman drove in Batlle with a single up the middle.
UTA added to its lead in the sixth inning as three more runs came around to score. Kyle Thomason and Josh McSpadden started the inning by being hit by pitches. Warrick executed a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position before Batlle was intentionally walked. Stevens third base-on-balls plated the first run and Newman plated two more with a single to center field.
The Islanders did not go away quietly as a sole home run from David Williams and a two-run double from Casey Buaas sent the game into the seventh inning with UTA ahead by only two.
TAMUCC took advantage of a walk and passed ball to cut the deficit to just one run.
Dillon Gee (1-2) earned his first collegiate victory after allowing five runs and striking out five in six innings of work. Blake Pierson picked up his second save by allowing one unearned run and fanning two in one inning of work. Jamie Burdine (1-2) took the loss as he allowed four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Newman, Batlle and Nelson each collected two hits for UTA, while Stevens drew three free passes. Buaas and Jason Graham each had three hits for the Islanders.
The second game of the doubleheader was suspended due to darkness in the bottom of the fifth inning with TAMUCC ahead 7-4. The game will be resumed tomorrow afternoon and the third game of the series will follow that.
