March 16, 2003
NATCHITOCHES, LOUISIANA...The University of Texas at Arlington took advantage of five Northwestern State errors to score six unearned runs in winning the rubber match of the three game series 7-3 Sunday afternoon at Brown-Stroud Field.
The Demons threatened to score in the first inning as they put runners on first and third with two outs. They tried the double steal, but catcher Dustin Bozarth threw to Kasey Baker who returned the throw to Bozarth to get the runner at the plate.
NWLa. got a run in the second inning as Alonzo Soliz led off with a double to left center field and came around to score on a Brandon Morgan single to left field.
UTA took the lead in the third inning as Bozarth hit a one out single to right field. Kasey Baker slapped a single through the right side on a hit-and-run advancing Bozarth to third. Right fielder Brian Hobbs bobbled the ball in right field allowing Bozarth to score and Baker to advance to third. Chris Taylor scored Baker from third with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Mavs plated two more runners in the fourth inning as Hunter Pence reached on an error by shortstop Scott Pittenger. With two outs, Darrell Preston drew a walk and Robby Deevers grounded to shortstop, but the throw by Pittenger was wide and pulled the second baseman off the bag to prolong the inning. Bozarth made the Demons pay as he delivered a single back up through the middle to score two runs.
NWLa. got a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth inning as Jeff Martin delivered a two-run home run over the left field wall to trim the lead to one.
UTA pushed its lead back to three runs in the seventh inning as Deevers and Bozarth drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Baker advanced both runners with a groundnut to second base and Deevers scored on an error by third baseman Tigger Lyles on a ground ball off the bat of Chris Taylor. Ryan Roberts drove in the second run of the inning on a groundout to second base.
The Demons threatened again in the eighth inning as they loaded the bases with two outs before Pierce Loveless came out of the bullpen and struck out pinch hitter Bob Barbier to end the threat.
In the ninth, Baker led off with a double down the right field line and went to third on a fielding error by the right fielder. Taylor drove in Baker with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Charlie Coffey (2-1) picked up the victory in his first start of the season as he pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking two. Zach Sanches (1-2) took the loss by allowing four unearned runs on five hits in four innings of work. Loveless picked up his first save of the season as he pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless ball, striking out two batters.
Bozarth led the offense with two hits and two runs batted in. Baker added two hits and Taylor also added three RBI's.
The Mavericks will return to action this Wednesday as they finally play their first home game of the season as the Sooners of Oklahoma come to play the first game in the newly renamed Clay Gould Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
