ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington owns its first winning streak of the season after beating Columbia 8-4 in Wednesday night's nonconference matchup at Clay Gould Ballpark.
The Mavericks improved to 7-14 and 2-0 on their current six-game homestand. UTA hadn't won consecutive games since a four-game winning streak in May of last season.
The Mavericks jumped all over Columbia with four runs in their first at-bat. Matt Shortall had the big blow in the inning, a two-run home run to left off Lions starter Ty Wiest. John Michael Twichell added a run-scoring double in the first.
Columbia (5-9) tried to chip away at UTA's lead, scoring four runs from the third through fifth innings. Nick Maguire and Gus Craig each hit solo home runs for the Lions during their comeback attempt.
UT Arlington kept a cushion by scoring one run in each the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Mavericks added another in the eighth to complete their scoring.
Left-handed reliever Chase Weaver picked up the win, improving to 2-0 after pitching 4.1 innings out of the bullpen and allowing just one earned run. UTA starter Justin Schnedler worked 3.2 innings and gave up three runs (two earned).
Eight starters had at least one hit for UT Arlington, which pounded out 14 as a team. Twichell and Ryan Bottger each racked up three hits. Derek Miller and Brady Cox each had two. Twichell and Darien McClemore joined Shortall with two RBI.
The Mavericks return to Sun Belt action Friday with the start of a three-game series against Arkansas State. UTA is 0-3 in league play.
